Side effects of medicines for Crones Disease are very common. The only really viable way of combating diseases such as Crones, is starting the other way around. If we improve our body's immune system and strength, our body will be able to bring back balance into the bacterial unbalance in our intestines which causes Crones Disease.

Mainstream doctors use mainstream medicines to try to improve the condition of their patients. In the case of Crones Disease, this means trying to stop or lessen the symptoms which are caused by the underlying disease. The medicines will not cure the disease though, and in many cases they will actually worsen the underlying cause. Most used are Aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, antibiotics, immunomodulators (to calm the immune system), and biologic therapies for moderate or severe Crones disease.

Allopathic (mainstream) doctors rely on these medicines to control the symptoms of Crones disease although they know that none of these medicines will actually cure the underlying cause. If we read about the side effects these medicines have, we might want to give the whole matter another thought: Diarrhea Headache, dizziness Increased risk of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract Indigestion, nausea, gas Hair loss Rash Decrease in white blood cells High blood pressure Mood swings, psychosis, insomnia Weight gain, moon facies Acne, increased facial hair, stretch marks Increased risk of infection Osteoporosis Vomiting Cough Sinus infections Sore throat

The problem of the Biologic Therapies is not only the side effects, but also the frequent injections (up to every 2 hours). The other medicines are normally taken orally, but can also be applied more locally targeted, in the form of enemas and suppositories.

Corticosteroids are known to have severe side effects, even when used for a short time. Yet, they are frequently used to control the symptoms. Your doctor will tell you that you cannot stop from one day to the other with your corticosteroids, because your symptoms are prone to worsen. I just start to think what it is these medicines do with our body, that their effect will be like that?

Antibiotics are used to "control the level of bacteria in your intestines". Now this is something I do not really understand. What I learned at school, is that our intestines functioning is based on good bacteria, which help to digest the food and eliminate the indigestible part. If I take antibiotics, they will kill, or at least diminish, ALL bacteria in my gut. If I have a very low level of good bacteria, doesn't that mean that any bad bacteria can take over very easily? Do antibiotics solve a problem on the short run, but create a problem on the long run?

Injectable or oral immunomodulators are used if the patient did not react well on other medicines to reduce the swelling, or for patients which developed complications like fistulas. Often they are given in combination with corticosteroids, whereby you can take lower doses of the latter, because their effect is increased by the immunomodulators. Immunomodulators are more expensive than other medicines used for Crones Disease, and you are at higher risk to develop secondary infections or other illnesses because they suppress the immune system. Doctors advise you to have your blood monitored regularly to see the effect on your bone marrow, liver and kidneys.

Biologic Therapies are the newest, and most expensive type of Crones disease treatment. "These Crones disease treatments are used to treat moderate to severe cases that haven't responded to other treatments. They can be used for initial treatment and then to maintain remission. Biologic therapies are powerful drugs and they do have side effects. Because they suppress the immune response, biologic therapies can leave you at risk for infections. There is some evidence that they increase the risk of conditions like blood infections, tuberculosis, and lymphoma. These risks are generally considered small, but you should talk with your doctor about pros and cons. Biologic therapies are not right for everyone." (source: http://www.webmd.com)

Often Crones Disease will cause diarrhea, and you will have to take medicines to compensate for the fluid loss and to stop the diarrhea. Some of the mentioned medicines can interact with common drugs like birth control pills, antacids, and even vitamins.

To recap: Treating Crones Disease with medicines will not cure the condition, and on the long run even probably make it worse. If we have a way to boost our immune system and improve the balance of bacteria in our gut, we will feel better and the symptoms will start to subside. Medicines will be necessary in a lesser amount, and as a result the side effects will also be less. our overall condition will improve, and eventually the new approach could substitute the treatment using the mentioned medicines.

Crones Disease is a chronic disease which has a big impact on the patient and his family. Side effects of medicines can make life more complicated; here you will find a proven approach to help your body fight your Crones Disease.
