In medical terminology, acne is known as Acne vulgaris. Generally this is not considered as life threatening condition as it never harms physically. The acne affects the teenagers the most but sometimes can be found on adults also. Acne affects both the gender equally. The peak age of getting the acne is 17-19 yr in males and 16-17 yr in females. Usually, acne gets healed themselves when one reaches the age of 23-28. One of the surveys says that 90% of the people don't require acne treatment except for any cosmetic reason as they heal automatically, but in some cases, the treatment is required for acne in their 30ies and 40ies.
One can define the acne as an inflammatory disease that involves the sebaceous glands, which are present under the skin. The appearance of acne is pustules or papules or comedones (black or white heads). The skin is marked by various red spots resulting from inflammation of sebaceous glands.
Symptoms of Acne
There are four steps in which signs and symptoms are seen. These are the steps in the form of changes in the skin and getting acne developed.
1. First and foremost is the changing of the normal skin to greasy or oily one.
2. Second change begins with increase in the sebum excretion, which is an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands. Normally this sebum comes out with perspiration and moistens the skin and thus, protects the skin.
3. Third stage is considered to be an important stage as in this, there will be formation of comedones that can be closed (white heads) or open (black heads).
4. This is the formation of papules or pustules or cyst from comedones. It is popularly known as pimple or acne.
There is no perfect place where acne can occur but generally the face, back, chest, neck buttocks are common site for acne.
Causes of Acne
There are innumerable causes of acne. If your skin is exposed to the harmful chemical then there are chances of getting acne. Pollens, dirt, excessive sebum secretion blocks the natural openings of the skin and this becomes the seat for microorganisms (especially bacteria). Bacteria gets accumulated and then later, produces the toxins, which irritates the skin locally finally giving rise to the skin. This inflamed condition is acne. Dairy hair and scalp with dandruff may also contribute to develop acne.
Usage of oil based cosmetics, stress, anxiety and insufficient sleep may also be triggering factor for acne.
