If your acne is mild, you might be able to control it using over the counter preparations. If not, you will need something stronger.
Accutane, or Isotretinoin, is an example of a treatment for severe acne. This is sometimes prescribed for people who have tried topical treatments on their acne but experienced no results from them. Up to 38% of patients are cured after one course but if your acne is very stubborn, you might need two or more courses of the treatment. Other cures for severe acne include antibiotics, azelaic acid and adabalene. These treatments are available in various strengths depending on the severity, type and location of your acne.
Medicines for severe acne often have side effects such as burning, peeling, scaling, redness, stinging or skin discoloration. It takes time for your skin to adjust to the medication and it might take 6 weeks or more before a marked improvement is noticed. Your skin might look much worse after commencing the treatment but that is to be expected. If you have serious side effects or you feel that the treatment is not working, another visit to your dermatologist or physician is the next step because there are other things to try. You do have to be patient with these types of treatments though as they are not going to work overnight. If your acne is severe, you have probably already had it for a while and perhaps tried many other medications without success.
A topical or oral antibiotic might be prescribed for you if you have severe acne. Erythromyocin and Tetracycline are common types of oral antibiotics. Oral antibiotics work by curbing the bacterial growth and reducing inflammation. There are side effects you might get if you take oral antibiotics. These might include allergies, liver troubles, gastrointestinal problems or yeast infections. You should not take Erythromycin if you are taking astemisole, terfenadine or cisapride because the combination might cause heart irregularity. You should not take tetracycline with antacids containing calcium, aluminium, magnesium or sodium bicarbonate as they can decrease the absorption of the acne medicine. Iron pills can do the same. Tetracycline might also reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive pills. If you are taking any other medicines, you need to inform your dermatologist in case there is a counteraction and one or other of your medicines will not work properly or cause dangerous side effects for you.
There are a number of cures for severe acne so you should not give up because it is possible to get rid of the most stubborn acne although be prepared for the fact that it might take several months and you might need several courses of treatment before your acne is completely cleared.
