Are you one of those people that think acne is created by dirt. If so, you are wrong. Acne is a complicated problem that involves your skin's renewal system and your hormonal system. Some doctors feel that acne is, in part, a reaction to testosterone, a hormone.
There are many options when it comes to managing and preventing acne.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 1 - Refrain from using alcohol. Use a skin toner that does not have high levels of isopropyl alcohol. Strong astringents will strip the top layer of skin off and your sebaceous glands may produce extra oil. This could result in dry, red skin and the possibility of more blemishes.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 2 - Don't use harsh scrubs. If you are going to exfoliate, then use a gentle formula with very small grains. You want to avoid using products that contain almond or apricot shell fragments. They may irritate or damage your skin and aggravate your acne.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 3 - Acne is not caused by dirt, so there is no need to over-wash. Washing your face continuously will not make the acne go away and may tend to dry out your skin and irritate acne-prone areas. Over-washing can also stimulate more oil production which may result in more breakouts. Wash your face only two or three times per day.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 4 - Drink lots of water to flush. This will flush out toxins in your body. Even if you don't suffer from acne, this is a good advice. Drink four to six large glasses of water every day.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 5 - Don't squeeze pimples. This will inflame your skin and can cause bacteria to go deeper into the skin causing greater infection. You may also damage the surrounding area which may leave a scar.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 6 - Reduce or stop smoking. Clinical studies have demonstrated that smoking tends to exacerbate the effects of acne.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 7 - Keep your hands off your face. Excessive touching of your face, including rubbing or even resting your chin in your hands, can drive Propionibacterium acnes (the bacteria that causes breakouts) into your pores.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 8 - Wash off after you exercise. Exercise creates heat and moisture which can be trapped against your skin. This will create an ideal breeding ground for the spreading of bacteria.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 9 - At the same time don't forget to exercise. Exercise will reduce stress and increase oxygen to the skin. This may contribute to alleviating some acne symptoms.
Acne Prevention Tip Number 10 - Eat a well-balance diet. Your skin, like your body, will benefit from a well-balanced diet rich with fruits, vegetables and grains.
Remember, there are steps you can take to reduce the severity of acne. Decide on a good regime and try and stick with it.
